Rabbi: Don't gather for Passover Seders

Passover
USA TODAY

Tonight is the night Jewish families here locally and around the world would gather to observe a ceremonial Passover dinner.

Just like Christian leaders are telling parishioners to not gather for Holy Week or Easter, Rabbi Ed Cohn says Jews should not gather for Passover Seders.

"This is a time when we all need to be creative, and when we all need to know that the most important thing is to be healthy and to stay healthy.  That's the number one requirement is Judaism is to save life."

He says he is certain God will understand if people do not observe the usual traditions, but notes virtual Seder meals are a wonderful option through video conferences.

"I trust God will be very understanding."

Cohn adds that if Jews do not consume to normal ceremonial foods or observe other traditions, that is fine.

"Doing the best you can, I have every trust that we can still understand the message of the liberation of Passover and its eternal message... of rekindling hope."

During a traditional Seder, a child asks, "Why is this night different from all other nights?"

The Rabbi says, "This Passover will be different from every other one."

He notes people can find the scripture or Passover Haggadah on the Internet if they do not have access to a physical copy.
