$16B expected to be spent on Father's Day

Less than 2 weeks till Father's day.  Are you planning on going all out for "dear ole" dad?  And while it's nothing compared to what we spent on mom for Mother's Day, Katherine Cullen, Senior Director for Industry and Consumer Insights with the National Retail Federation says...

"We're expecting Father's Day spending to reach about 16 billion dollars which is up from last year when we saw about 15.3 billion spent on dad," said Cullen.

Those are record numbers according to Cullen.

"That averages to about 140 dollars per person," Cullen noted.

A good bit of that for us is spending time with Dad and taking him out to New Orleans finest restaurants for brunch or lunch, even dinner.

"We know consumers want Father's Day to be more memorable and there is nothing more memorable than spending time with your loved ones and that's one reason why a special outing or dinner can be really popular this time of year," said Cullen.

Gift cards are also expected to be big this year.  And dads also like getting gadgets and tools.

Cullen says the gap doesn't seem to be closing between spending on Mother's Day and Father's Day.  She says for both holidays, spending just continues to go up.
