There is a bill that aims to notify restaurant consumers of where crawfish and shrimp come from.  It received final passage on Friday.

Bill author, Larose Representative Truck Gisclair ,says the measure will require restaurants u to make it clear if the seafood is not domestic.

“It’s going to have to say country of origin or import and if they use domestic, they don’t have to worry about it.  It’s a shrimp po’boy,” said Gisclair.

Some concerns are the levels of antibiotics used to preserve crop in the transportation process from other countries.

“It’s become, in my opinion, a health hazard," Gisclair said.  "We’re becoming immune to antibiotics nationwide and we’re wondering why.”

Gisclair says initially the Louisiana Restaurant Association was in opposition of the bill, but he believes they’ve arrived at a happy medium, which  is a win for both restaurants and consumers.

“We were able to go to the table, do some compromise, and I knew I had the votes to get it passed,” said Gisclair.

Country of orgin information would also apply regarding seafood sold in grocery stores.
