The pursuit of a robbery suspect through Metairie ended in a spectacular crash in Kenner Sunday Afternoon.
Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer Glen Boyd says the driver was a suspect in a robbery earlier this weekend. Boyd says there were no serious injuries and no shots fired.
The suspect led Sheriff’s on the pursuit on and off the I-10 into Kenner where the suspect was roaring down the Williams Boulevard offramp that runs behind the Esplanade Mall. Witnesses said when he reached the intersection of 32nd Street and Connecticut Avenue at the bottom of the ramp the suspect tried to made a left, but the car skidded on the rain slick pavement and crashed into a tree. Had the car missed the tree to the left or right, it would’ve sailed into a home.
Police assailed the vehicle moments after the crash. All of the airbags in the late model Nissan Sentra deployed and deputies were unable to see in the car. They had their weapons drawn ready for anything. That’s when the suspect opened the door, climbed out, clasped his hands behind his head and dropped to the ground. Deputies immediately took him into custody. After being checked out by EMS paramedics, the suspect was rushed off to custody.
The chase involved JPSO, State Police and Kenner units. Deputies and officers involved in the pursuit passed through major intersections including Veterans and Clearview keeping pace and staying ahead of the suspect, prepared for anything.
