Rounds of rain to arrive today, worst of it in the afternoon

Southeast Louisiana is under a flash flood watch until 7:00pm.

"Heavy rain is the main story of the day with rainfall rates of 2-3" per hour possible," according to WWL-TV Meteorologist Dave Nussbaum. "This amount of rain could lead to flash flooding and street flooding across the New Orleans area."

We could pick up 1-3" of heavy rain over the next 3 days - most of this will fall today. Watch out for flash flooding and street flooding. #lawx #BeOn4 @WWLTV pic.twitter.com/Y42R1HbnnM

He expects the most intense downfalls to be in the afternoon.

"Right around lunch time... that's when some of the rougher weather could come in.  That should get out of here around three o' clock or so, then should have more scattered storms coming in behind that."

If the system keeps moving at a good pace and heavy cells don't train over one area, street flooding could be minimal.  However, if any strong downpour stalls or we see a series of cells over on part of the region... streets could fill with water.

Nussbaum says the deep tropical moisture stays over us on Friday.

"We will have another round of showers and storms with some heavy rain."

Weekend Forecast:

  • The low pressure will move into Tennessee and stall there Saturday and Sunday. It will be far enough away to reduce our chance for rain, but you will still need to plan for scattered showers and storms on Saturday. Then look for fewer storms on Sunday. High temperatures will be back in the lower 90s.
