President Trump and Mexico have averted new tariffs on products sent to the US, after Mexican leaders agreed to step up the battle against illegal immigrants streaming across the boarder.
House Republican Whip Steve Scalise of Metairie released a statement supporting the president's actions.
He applauded the agreement with Mexico to increase efforts to curb migration in return for the suspension of tariffs that were set to take effect next week.
“President Trump’s newly-signed agreement with Mexico is great news for both our economy and our country’s border security. Once again, President Trump has proven those who doubted him wrong by getting Mexico to step up their efforts to help us secure our southern border," Scalise said.
He added that the deal also puts the US in a better position to make the USMCA trade agreement for North America a reality.
"Which would produce real wins for American workers and businesses. I urge Speaker Pelosi to swiftly bring this to the floor so we can grow an even stronger American economy while also making our border more secure."
