Children will be heading back to school in Jefferson Parish as well as St. Charles and St. Bernard Parishes, today. And that means drivers will have to be paying close attention attention.
In Jefferson Parish, Sheriff Joe Lopinto says his deputies will be out looking for speeders. Lopinto adds it is against the law to be holding your phone in a school zone while either talking or texting.
"We don't want any texting or calling in the school zones, illegal in both areas and we will be out there trying to enforce that," Lopinto said. "We know that safety is obviously decreased when you are looking at your phone."
And he says crossing guards of course will be around to assist, and keep the kids safe while crossing the streets.
"We want to make sure that we keep our children safe here," Lopinto said. "I wish we had some type of app that would shut off phones while people are driving because it would make our lives a lot easier"
St. Tammany Parish schools begin on Friday. In Orleans Parish classes take in on Monday.
