Stocks finished with broad and sharp gains, helping the market erase virtually all of the steep losses seen earlier this week.


The Dow Jones Industrials jumped 371 points, the Nasdaq Composite rallied 176, and the S&P 500 rose 54.

Boeing, Apple and Microsoft all rose at least 2%.

Marathon Oil shares jumped 6.7% after the energy company reported better-than-expected earnings and revenue for the second quarter, thanks to solid production numbers.

Oil futures rebounded a bit today.  September crude rose $1.45, or 2.8%, to settle at $52.54 a barrel.

After today’s closing bell, chipmaker Broadcom said it is acquiring Symantec’s enterprise business for $10.7 billion in cash.  And, Uber reported a wider-than-expected second-quarter loss; shares fell sharply in response.
