Should cops be able to bust motorists for 'aggressive driving?'

A Louisiana lawmaker wants cops to go after aggressive drivers, and is proposing a new misdemeanor offense called aggressive driving.

"Aggressive driving in a person who commits a combination of moving traffic offenses in the same driving experience in a manner that is dangerous to other persons on the road," said Rep. Sam Jenkins (D-Shreveport). "We're looking for those people who become annoyed on the roadway, they begin to speed, they begin follow to closely,  cut in and out of traffic...and they do it with a total disregard for the safety of ether people that are on the roadway."

Jenkins says this would be tougher than existing reckless driving laws.

"The teeth that we're putting into this is that your license can be suspended for six months," he said. "We have reckless driving, but it has no teeth in it."

Jenkins says road rage is on the rise, and it's scary.

"It's becoming a very dangerous situation because it leads to people sometimes getting out of their cars, getting into physical altercations with one another, or even worse, they use their cars in a manner like it's a weapon," he said.
