It's a problem that many towns and parishes could deal with, expenses with garbage collection and recycling are rising and causing garbage collection to be reduced.
Slidell decided to make a change and reduce garbage pickup to one day a week. District E Councilman Kenny Tamborella explained it became a matter of cost.
The cost of recycling was driving the cost of garbage collection up, and because we were up for a contract renewal with the current contract for the city collector, they gave us three proposals," said Tamborella.
Those options were keeping the current level of service at a higher cost, getting rid of recycling, or reducing regular pickup and keeping recycling. He called it a tight vote. And other town and parishes could be faced with the same dilemma.
"The data that was presented to us showed that this is a bit in the national trend going in this direction," Tamborella said.
Tamborella said he was opposed to the one day a week garbage collection.
"We, in Slidell we don't always have to be on the cutting end of trends, right," he asked.
But in the end garbage collection was reduced to once a week with recycling . Recycling is one dedicated day, that happens on Wednesday.
