Will auto insurance ever come down in Louisiana?

The cost of auto insurance in Louisiana continues to be among the highest in the nation and lawmakers are attempting to pass several bills that might make a difference.

State Representative Kirk Talbot says the keys are boosting competition, so more companies will write policies here and even place caps on lawsuit payouts.

Talbot says they've been told the big checks from lawsuits and the overall legal climate is holding many companies back.

''You cannot force them to write policies in Louisiana and the proof is in the statistics, Nationwide won't come here and we lost 6 or 8 commercial companies,'' said Talbot

Talbot says he's been told by insurance companies they will lose money in the Bayou State because of litigation.

''The average income in Louisiana verses the premiums makes it unfavorable for many residents,'' Talbot said.

There are several bills designed to tackle the insurance problem but as in the past opposition is expected to be fierce.
