Stocks celebrate new highs, oil also up

U.S. stocks notched solid gains in a shortened session, with the indexes finishing at new closing highs. The Dow Industrials jumped 179 points, the Nasdaq Composite gained 61, and the S&P 500 added 22.

Oil futures rebounded today, with August crude leaping $1.09, or 1.9%, to settle at $57.34 a barrel.  The Energy Information Administration reported that U.S. crude supplies declined by 1.1 million barrels last week, a smaller-than-expected drop.

The latest Marvel superhero film is catching a lot of fans in its web, as “Spider-Man: Far From Home” brought in an estimated $39.2 million in theaters across North America in its Tuesday debut.  Industry analysts look for the newest Spider-Man film, with Tom Holland again in the title role, to gross anywhere from $125 million to $150 million during its first six days in theaters.
