Stocks posted solid gains to close out the week -- the Dow Industrials jumping 197 points -- lifted by a strong April jobs report.
The tech-heavy Nasdaq rallied 127 points, or 1.6%. The S&P 500 was up 28.
The Labor Department says the U.S. economy added 263,000 jobs in April - easily beating expectations - as the unemployment rate declined to 3.6%, a 49-year-low.
Much stronger-than-expected quarterly earnings today from Newell Brands. The consumer-products company, whose brands include Rubbermaid, Sharpie, Coleman Outdoor and Yankee Candle, posted per-share earnings of 14 cents and revenue of $1.71 billion. Newell’s shares soared 13.5%.
Oil futures finished slightly higher. June crude edged up 13 cents to settle at $61.94 a barrel.
