Stocks see sharp gains, oil up almost a dollar

Stocks finished with broad and sharp gains today, amid renewed optimism regarding the prospect of progress in the U.S.-China trade dispute.

The Dow Jones Industrials rallied 326 points, the Nasdaq Composite jumped 116, and the S&P 500 tacked on 36.

October crude oil rose another 1.7%, up 93 cents, to settle at $56.71 a barrel.

The Associated Press says plans to shift more than 500,000 Louisiana Medicaid patients to new health plans by January will remain stalled, with Gov. John Bel Edwards’ administration unable to negotiate contracts with four managed-care companies while legal disputes continue.

LSU’s Athletics Department will donate $11 million to the university this year.  That could be the last huge donation, however.  Athletics Director Scott Woodward told the Rotary Club of Baton Rouge today that continuing to make recurring payments would make it difficult to compete with rival schools.
