Gardening has never been more popular than now, with everyone staying at home. There is a tradition of planting vegetable gardens during times of crisis, just think about those victory gardens back in WW2. Our own Dan Gill, a horticulturist, tells us where to start.
“Great vegetables that we can plant now include transplant of tomatoes, peppers and eggplant. You can also plant squash, sweet potatoes, lima beans and string beans. “
If you don’t have the yard space, these can be grown in large containers filled with potting soil As long as you get good sunlight, your victory garden will be fine in containers.
If you are not inclined to plant a victory vegetable garden, blooming plants do wonders for your state of mind. Dan says “plant things like Zinnias, Pentas, or Lantanas; anything that is heat tolerant. They will bloom their hearts out for you all summer long.”
Garden centers and feed stores are open, they are considered part of the chain of food So, stop by your local nursery, and get those garden projects going, it can do so much to brighten your life, and the lives of your family. If you have any gardening questions, Dan is happy to answer them. Just email him at dan@wwl.com
