A Kenner teenager, accompanied by his mother, handed himself over to police this morning to face battery charges after a Sunday morning shooting.
Police say 17-year-old John Green shot a man in the arm inside a house at 833 Champaigne Drive.
"The victim and witness, friends of the suspect’s family, were having a conversation when the suspect identified to be John Green, 17, Kenner injected himself into the conversation," according to a Kenner Police news release. "Green then produced a handgun and shot the victim without provocation."
Police say the victim received a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the arm. The victim and witness left the house and called police. Believing the suspect to still be in the house, and still armed, a SWAT team arrived and attempted to make contact with the occupants. After that was unsuccessful, police say the SWAT team deployed gas into the residence and made entry, but were unable to locate Green.
This morning shortly after midnight, Green, accompanied by his mother, turned himself in. Police say Green's mother also handed over a handgun believed to have been used in the shooting.
