Keep tariffs and revenue at standard market rates, the Port of New Orleans is moving ahead with a two-percent hike tariffs on containers and breakbulk cargoes in 2020.
The port is also considering larger tariff increases and adding new tariffs on other services provided by the operation.
Tariffs are the amount of money shipping companies pay the port to dock their ships at the port's berths.
Wharf tariffs usually cover general services like berthing, unloading, security deposits, terminal fees, harbor fees, assignment fees, and 'hotel' services like clean up of the wharf and removal of obstructions from the berth.
Port representatives told New Orleans City Business the hike in tariffs are in line with other nearby ports on the Mississippi River and along the Gulf Coast.
The port commission has also approved an 8-percent hike in what the port charges for the hourly use of their container cranes.
The money will go to pay for new cranes under order and other improvements the port is paying for.
