The cost of a 30 second commercial in this year’s Super Bowl is $5.6 million, up from $5.2 million from last year. Just to put this in perspective, when the Saints were in the Super Bowl, the cost of a 3-second commercial was $2,954,010.
Why do companies spend this much on a 30 second spot? “It’s one of the biggest events of the year for advertising,” said Dr. Dan Rice, Associate Professor and director graduate studies in marketing at LSU.
There is a science to spending upwards of $5.5 million on a commercial to air during the Super Bowl TV broadcast.
“The types of products advertised, beer, sodas, snacks, things relating to partying generally do well,” said Rice. “If a company wants to cast their net widely, this a good way to reach a diverse audience.”
This year, there are also going to be some political ads during the Super Bowl Advertising is always sort of a gamble, and Dr. Rice tells us these types of ads could be hit and miss, depending on where you live.
If done right, advertisers can get a good return on their advertising dollar, or $5.6 million of them.
