11:30am UPDATE: System upgraded to a tropical storm
The National Hurricane Center is tracking Tropical Storm Cristobal.
"Slow strengthening is expected during the next couple of days," according to a Hurricane Center advisory. "Observations from an Air Force Reserve Unit Hurricane Hunter aircraft indicate that Tropical Depression Three has strengthened into Tropical Storm Cristobal. The maximum winds are estimated to be 40 mph (65 km/h) with higher gusts."
The system is not expected to move much the next couple of days.
"The [storm] is forecast to move slowly west-southwestward or southward this afternoon and tonight, and meander over the southern Bay of Campeche through late Wednesday. On the forecast track, the center of the cyclone is forecast to be near the coast of the southern Bay of Campeche tonight through Thursday."
After that, forecasters believe the storm will start moving toward the north.
WWL TV Meteorologist Dave Nussbaum says it could eventually bring a lot of rain to Louisiana, if the track brings the storm this way.
