The Man and His Horn: Trombone Shorty saluted with his own float

A two story animated likeness of Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews adorns a new float for the Krewe of Ferret during their parade today.

Freret's theme of Music from New Orleans salutes the musical greats from the Crescent City.

Shorty himself will be riding aboard as Grand Marshal as his likeness blasts out the tunes for people gathered along the parade route.

The animated prop is the largest of its kind ever affixed to a Mardi Gras float.

Kern Studio's, builder of some of the biggest and best remembered floats, created the new attraction.

Barry Kern, one of its creators, told WWL-TV: "This float when it comes down the street with that giant trombone goin'.  That's an image that you'll see all over the world.  And it's just another thing that sets a positive image for all of New Orleans."

Freret Captain Bobby Hjortsberg says "It's to bring the music the music culture and the Mardi Gras culture of New Orleans and bring them together into one. Who better to do that than Trombone Shorty?"

The Krewe will kick off it's parade at 3:30pm at Napoleon and Tchoupitoulas and this year it will end at Mardi Gras World to celebrate the Shorty Gras Ball, featuring a musical lineup curated by and featuring Shorty himself.
