Tropical threat? Not really, but get ready for return of rain

The broad area of low pressure that has the attention of the National Hurricane Center and your local weather experts in the WWL-TV forecast center is not expected to develop into a depression or Tropical Storm Barry, but it is likely to bring rain to the New Orleans area this weekend.

"Invest 91 is in the extreme western Gulf of Mexico. It now has a really low, 20 percent chance of developing into a depression or storm," said meteorologist Alexandra Cranford. "But as it kind of drifts to the northwest over southern Texas, it will send some moisture our way to bring our rain chances up to near 70 percent by Thursday."

Invest 91 now has a much lower chance of development. It is still a messy low pressure area and is expected to move over northern Mexico by tonight. That would close its window for organization. It will still send some moisture & rain our way starting Wed. pic.twitter.com/RPVDONPipK

The National Hurricane Center says a reconnaissance flight into the system has been canceled, but says the system will make a lot of rain for parts of Texas, Mexico, and the Lower Mississippi Valley.

A broad low over the western Gulf of Mexico is producing widespread showers. Although the chances of it developing into a tropical depression are now low, the threat for heavy rainfall persists.
