Today is the statistical peak of the hurricane season, meaning that most years this is when are at the halfway of the activity.
This year has broken records for pre-peak activity with 17 named storms already.
The tropics map is crowded, with six features the National Hurricane Center is monitoring.
One of them is headed for the Gulf of Mexico.
A tropical wave is forecast to move past south Florida and into the Gulf this weekend.
"The Hurricane Center is highlighting it for a low chance of development," WWL TV Meteorologist Dave Nussbaum said. "I am not seeing any of the models buying into that this morning."
Elsewhere a wave coming off Africa does have a high chance of becoming the next named storm, Sally.
A couple of other waves are off the US East Coast and way out in the Atlantic.
Tropical Storms Rene and Paulette are also in the Atlantic, but the only land threatened is Bermuda.
