While the race for Governor has everybody's attention, an important vote Saturday in Westwego will take place.

The City is asking its residents to hike their property taxes by 6.5-mills to help raise pay for police.

The proposed 10-year millage hike will generate $415,000-a-year.

That would raise salaries in the department from $16.30-to-$19.50-an-hour.

According to the Times-Picayune/New Orleans Advocate, both Mayor Joe Peoples and Chief Dwayne Munch says the pay hikes are needed to keep from losing officers to higher paying law enforcement jobs in Jefferson Parish.

Chief Munch says his municipality invests in their officers training and when they leave, more money is spent training new officers.

Nine of 13 officers who left Westwego P.D. last year took higher paying police jobs.

The hike in pay will bring salaries in line with those in Kenner and Harahan.

Currently, the department is funded by a 4.13-mill tax which generates $3.4-million budget.
