LSU running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire suffered an injury in practice yesterday leaving his status for the No. 1 Tigers’ Dec. 28 College Football Playoff matchup with No. 4 Oklahoma uncertain.
“Clyde did get hurt yesterday. I don’t know the extent of his injury. I was just talking to (director of athletic training) Jack (Marucci) about it.
“He went to get some tests today and we’ll know a little bit more towards the end of the week. He did not practice today and he could not practice.”
Edwards-Helaire is LSU’s leading rusher with 1,290 yards and 16 touchdowns on the season. He’s caught 50 passes for 399 yards and a score.
If Edwards-Helaire is unable to play LSU will rely on on freshmen running backs Tyrion Davis-Price, John Emery and Chris Curry.
Davis-Price emerged as the Tigers main backup to Edwards-Helaire this season tallying 270 yards and six rushing scores. Emery has also flashed the ability that had him rated as one of the country’s top running backs coming out of high school, scoring three times and wavering 5.1 yards per carry.
“They gotta step up,” Orgeron said. “Next man up. If it’s their turn, if Clyde can’t play, those guys are gonna step up and they are going to do very well.
“But I’m not sure that Clyde can play or can’t play yet.”
