Clyde Edwards-Helaire’s status a ‘game-time situation’

LSU’s top running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire’s status for Saturday’s College Football playoff Semifinal is going a “game-time situation,” Tigers head coach Ed Orgeron said Thursday.

“Clyde has not practiced yet,” Orgeron said before LSU’s Thursday practice session. “He ran a little bit yesterday, ran straight ahead. Medically, hopefully, he's cleared to practice. I don't know if he will. It would be the first day he would. I think he may try something today. I'm not sure.

“It's going to be a game-time situation. Knowing Clyde, if he can play, he's going to try. We're really not sure yet. Do I want him to play? Yes. Do I expect him to try to play? Yes. How much he can play? I don't know.”

Edwards-Helaire was not present for the portion of practice that was open to the media Thursday and was not at the Media Day event. Orgeron said the running back was receiving treatment.

Edwards-Helaire is LSU’s leading rusher with 1,290 yards and 16 touchdowns this season and he’s also caught 50 passes for 399 yards and a score.

Orgeron said earlier this week that if Edwards Helaire is unable to play the Tigers were confident in their three other freshmen Tyrion Davis-Price, John Emery Jr. and Chris Curry.

Davis-Price emerged as the Tigers’ main backup to Edwards-Helaire tallying 270 yards and six rushing scores while Emery has also flashed the ability that had him rated as one of the country’s top running backs coming out of high school, scoring three times and averaging 5.1 yards per carry.
