The Allstate Sugar Bowl announced Joe Burrow as the the 2019 Manning Award winner Wednesday. The LSU quarterback who raked in accolades, including the Heisman Trophy, said he was honored to receive the award named for a family he’s grown close to over the past year.
“Anytime I get to be mentioned with the Manning name, it’s a huge honor,” Burrow said. “I’ve gotten to know the Manning family over the last three quarters of the year and they've been incredible to me.
“Peyton has texted me a few times, just checking in, and Archie texts me just about every week so that means a lot to me. So, it’s been a huge honor for me and my family.”
Burrow posted one of the best college football seasons in history setting the NCAA FBS record with 60 touchdown passes, while leading the NCAA with 5,671 passing yards. His numbers helped the Tigers to 15-0 season including a victory in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game.
Since winning the Championship Burrow said he’s been back in his home state of Ohio preparing for the NFL Draft in April where he’s projected to be the No. 1 overall selection.
Between now and then, Burrow will have a busy schedule which will include throwing at LSU’s Pro Day April 3.
“I’m going to the Super Bowl on Thursday,” Burrow said. “I’m excited I get to experience that. I’ve got a couple friends playing in it and a couple friends that are down there so that should be a lot of fun and then just go back and start training again.”
Burrow said that he’s still hasn’t had much time to reflect on just how much he’s accomplished since the start of his senior season.
“I’ve had a little time, it’s still been crazy though,” Burrow said. “Because you’ve been interviewing agents and talking on the phone with people and trying to set up schedules for training and doing all that kind of stuff. So, it’s still been pretty crazy and been on the phone a lot so I haven’t that much time to do it.”
