It didn’t take long for LSU to show just how potent its new offense could be.
Barely two and a half minutes into the game, the Tigers had found the endzone the first of seven times on the evening. LSU’s new look offense powered the Tigers (1-0) to nearly 500 yards of offense and a 55-3 route of Georgia Southern.
LSU quarterback Joe Burrow tied a school record with five touchdown passes, all in the first half.
His first scoring toss was a 13-yard completion to sophomore Ja’Marr Chase to cap a 6-play, 75-yard drive.
The LSU defense held on the ensuing drive and highly touted freshmen cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. set the Tigers up with nice field position after an impressive punt return. Running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire then finished a 6-play, 34-yard drive with a 1-yard run.
LSU added one more score in the first quarter when Joe Burrow connected with receiver Justin Jefferson for a 9-yard touchdown pass.
Burrow connected with sophomore receiver Terrace Marshall Jr. for three scores and LSU went into the locker room with a 42-3 lead.
Burrow started the second half but after a single drive the Tigers turned to quarterback Myles Brennan.
Burrow finished the game 23-of-27 for 278 yards and the five scores.
LSU heads to Austin next week to face the Texas Longhorns.
