The Saints moved up in this year’s draft to select two players out of the SEC, so LSU head coach Ed Orgeron knows little about Texas A&M’s Erik McCoy and Florida’s Chauncey Gardner-Johnson.
“The center from Texas A&M can handle a nose tackle one-on-one,” Coach O told hosts Bobby Hebert and Mike Detillier. “He and the guy from Georgia were the 2 best centers we faced. Very good run blocker, good pass blocker. Tough, athletic; I think they got a really good player.”
Orgeron likened Gardner-Johnson to Tiger’s safety Grant Delpit since both are so versatile and give the defensive coordinator a slew of options.
“I think this guy can play wherever you want,” Orgeron said about the Saints 4th round pick. “He can blitz, he can cover man to man. He can play the post, excellent safety.”
Coach O also talked a about linebacker Devin White, who went to Tampa Bay 5th overall, and a little bit about a couple of players who really made a big jump in their progress in spring practices.
