What might a contract for Saints quarterback Drew Brees look like?

Drew Brees says he’s coming back, so what would a contract for the future Hall of Fame quarterback look like?

The Who Dat Nation exhaled after QB Drew Brees announced on social media that he will return for another run at it this NFL season. Now that his intention has been made, Brees and the Saints have to negotiate a contract to make it truly official. What might that contract look like?

In all likelihood, the deal is going to be a 1 or 2 year deal that averages 25 million per year. That is well below market value for an elite franchise quarterback regardless of age. Coach Sean Payton is leaving the negotiations up to Drew and General Manager Mickey Loomis. “I would say this to both Drew and Mickey, here we are…however many years. And every time that subject comes up…they always seem to get it done in an efficient matter. I don’t think that will be any different this time around,” explained the Saints head coach.

Drew Brees is represented by Tom Condon of CA (California Arts) sports. However, given the uniqueness of this deal, Brees might decide to be his own representative and negotiate a team friendly deal. The goal would be to give the Saints more space to retain critical potential free agents and also target some unrestricted free agents the Saints might want to add.

As Drew Brees said during the NFL Pro Bowl, “It’s not a matter of if the contract gets done, just a matter of when.” Brees has also made it known that he has no desire to play for any other team. In other words, he won’t test free agency, and leverage another team against the Saints.
