The Saints are expected to activate defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins from the PUP list, according to a league source.
The news was first reported by the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Rankins tore his Achilles tendon in the Jan. 13 Wild Card win over the Philadelphia Eagles. Prior to that injury Rankins was having the best season of his young career and had tallied a career-high eight sacks in the regular season.
There’s no rush to get him back on the field, but the Saints needed to activate him to the 90-man roster in order to progress his rehab. This means Rankins might be able to do some individual drills.
According to the source, Rankins is not at all likely to be on the field in Week 1 against the Houston Texans.
