We are coming down the home stretch Who Dats. Just one more preseason game remains and ‘ain't nothing like the real thing, baby.  Week 1 against the Houston Texans is just 2 weeks away.  There were 13 players not taking part in today:

QB  Drew Brees

RB Dwayne Washington

WR Keith Kirkwood

WR Austin Carr

TE Garrett Griffin

TE Jared Cook

C Cameron Tom

G Marshall Newhouse

DE Mario Edwards

LB Alex Anzalone

LB Craig Roberson

LB AJ Klein

S Saquan Hampton

After the day’s workout, Coach Sean Payton said that Brees was given a veterans day off, while Griffin was placed on injured reserve.

The return of Rankins

The big announcement though was that defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins passed his physical and has come off the physically unable to perform list.  Payton said at the start of training camp that Rankins was ahead of schedule in his recovery from a torn Achilles he suffered in January, but to be back on the field 8 months later truly is remarkable.

“It’s by the grace of God, I put it all in his hands.” said Rankins. “I’ve had a great support system through this entire thing; family, loved ones.  This training staff put me in the right position to be able to progress daily and be able to get back out here and give myself a shot to help this team.”

Coach Payton would not put a timetable on a return to play for Rankins. Week one is not likely, but the team does feel like he should be able to contribute before week 6.

Sherels sighting

Marcus Sherels was signed in free agency to provide the Saints some pop in the punt return game.  But, we haven’t seen the 10 year vet in action at all this preseason leaving the door wide open for undrafted rookie Deonte Harris to take the lead for the gig.  Sherels was back today though and worked off to the side during drills.  He take part in fielding punts though and could finally see some game action in Black & Gold in Thursday’s preseason finale against the Miami Dolphins
