Dwayne Washington isn’t often talked about at Saints training camp, but is likely going to end up the #3 option in the Black & Gold’s backfield. He spent his first 2 seasons in the NFL as a member of the Detroit Lions after getting drafted in the 7th round out of the University of Washington; then had 154 yards on 27 carries last season as a member of the Saints. His big game came in week 17 in the Superdome against the Carolina Panthers, when he racked up 108 yards on 11 carries.
Head Coach Sean Payton mentioned him as an early camp standout; citing his contributions in the kicking game as a valued added bonus to his hard running style.
Washington met with the media following Saturday’s practice and knows despite the kind words from his coach, there is still a lot of camp left and he needs to keep working hard this camp. He has an advantage over the other backs brought in to compete for a spot because of the familiarity of the offense. One of the things Washington touched on was his approach to improving in the offseason before checking in for a 2nd training camp in Metairie.
“Really, just focused on my hands and focused on my running style; which is always being that back that’s like slow too, fast through. Which is being comfortable catching the ball out the backfield and being up or just obviously keeping my strength up and things of that nature.”
