The Milwaukee Bucks set the tone, and now others have followed their lead.
The Milwaukee Brewers and Cincinnati Reds both agreed not to take the field on Wednesday night in response to the shooting of Jacob Blake.
Several other teams followed suit as the Seattle Mariners and San Diego Padres, as well as the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants also chose not to play.
Cubs outfielder Jason Heyward was a healthy scratch from Wednesday's game after a discussion he had with manager David Ross. The St. Louis Cardinals also released a statement that outfielder Dexter Fowler and pitcher Jack Flaherty were taking a stand in solidarity and that Fowler was a healthy scratch Wednesday night.
The decision by the Brewers was made by the players just hours after the Bucks and the rest of the NBA decided against playing their slate of playoff games on Wednesday for the same reason.
The Brewers released a statement that they decided against playing to draw attention to the issues that really matter.
Mariners second baseman Dee Gordon wrote on Twitter that the team took a vote and unanimously decided against playing.
Blake, a Black man, was shot by police officers outside of his vehicle where his three children were seated in Kenosha, Wisconsin -- about 40 miles from Milwaukee.
Prior to the decision not to play, Brewers reliever Josh Hader spoke with reporters and was asked about what the Bucks had done.
"It's a tremendous stand. ... We have to bring light to this situation that we have," he said. "It's a big thing."
Major League Baseball released a statement on the games that were postponed.
