WATCH: Olympian fixes kayak with condom, wins gold

“Bet you never knew condoms could be used for kayak repairs.
Very stretchy, much strong.”

Accompanied by a cry-laugh emoji, that’s how an Instagram post from TheHighlightsClubAU reads, and it’s discussing a very particular and famous kayak – the one belonging to Australian Olympic gold medalist Jessica Fox.

In a video post, Fox uses a substance captioned as a “carbon mixture,” then uses the condom as a protective covering over the repair.

The Tokyo games are the first since 1984 where the Olympic committee hasn’t handed out free condoms, as the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has the organizers more focuse on discouraging fraternizing than making providing protection. So it’s likely Fox had to bring her own, and the paddler’s prescient proliferation of prophylactics in her gameday arsenal helped the 27-year-old, four-time Olympic medalist take home an elusive gold.
