Disappointment may not be a strong enough word for the performance the Saints put forth on Monday night in Las Vegas. And Saints Radio Network color analyst Deuce McAllister believes the entire team needs a top-to-bottom gut-check before they take the field again.
My star player? I have to have you playing like a star. But if I’m requesting that from you, the kid that everybody’s trying to figure out his name… you have to prove and show each week why we’re dressing you out.
So the guy that’s a 10-year vet or the guy that went to the Pro Bowl last year or two years ago or however long ago it was, I need you to show why you’re a Pro Bowl player. I need you to show why you’re an All-Pro player. So the challenge isn’t just to the rookie that’s happy to be on the squad. The challenge comes to each and every individual player. That’s the mentality that they have to have. And if they don’t have it, they’re gonna lose again on Sunday. Because you’re playing a pretty good Green Bay team that’s playing with some pretty good confidence.
McAllister said Wednesday night on WWL Radio that, while quarterback Drew Brees certainly didn’t play his best game against the Raiders, there was plenty of blame to go around.
Let me put it this way. Drew was not alone in that loss. I’ll put it that way. Even he will tell you that he’s gotta play better. But just to say it was all Drew Brees? That’s not the case.
And I understand. Some people are ready for Drew to move on… More power to you. But for us, we’re gonna live in the moment. And until he proves and shows that he can’t physically go out there and do it and be the quarterback and be the leader of this team, he’s the leader of this team. If anybody goes out there and says it’s all on Drew, they’re not watching the same game. Because even from the offensive standpoint, it’s more than Drew that needs to play better for that offense to play up to its capabilities.
At 1-1 on the young season, the Saints will be back on the field Sunday night for a primetime showdown with the Green Bay Packers. Coverage on WWL starts that afternoon at 3pm.
