Super Bowl champion Brad Johnson coached LSU quarterback Max Johnson "out of the womb," but he has a new role he's proud of these days.

Brad Johnson spoke on the Upon Further Review podcast this week and said he'd welcome an invitation to help out the current Tigers roster, but he's fine with just being a dad to his two sons. Jake Johnson is a tight end committed to join LSU next year.

"I taught him how to do a 3- and 5-step drop when he was 6 and 7 years old," Brad Johnson said. "Coached all his youth and middle school and high school teams, and now I’m just a dad sitting in the stands eating popcorn and watching the games.”

Brad Johnson played 15 NFL seasons across five NFL teams, winning a title with now-Las Vegas Raiders coach Jon Gruden in the 2022 season.

Max is currently in an offseason battle for the starting job with Myles Brennan after an impressive two-game run to close out the season with wins over Florida and Ole Miss as Brennan recovered from injury. The Tigers open up the 2021 season on Sept. 4 against UCLA.

Johnson said he's always available as a resource to his sons, and has gotten to know LSU head coach Ed Orgeron over the past few years through the recruiting process. Orgeron visited the Johnson household, which has become "big Tigers fans" in the process.

“You’ve got to kind of pick your spots. Right now I’m a dad. They’ve got plenty of coaches," Johnson said. "They’ve got plenty of LSU alumni, players that they’ve had. So if he ever did I’d welcome it, but really in the position Max is in, my younger son, I need to be more of a dad than a spokesperson or anything like that.”
