LSU coach Brian Kelly likes to feature the tight end in his offenses, so it was not a surprise to see the Tigers sign three tight ends in their 2023 recruiting class.
Mason Taylor is the starter at the position after an impressive freshman campaign in 2022. Taylor caught 38 passes for 414 yards and three touchdowns. He was also on the receiving end on the biggest two-point conversion in school history on the final play of the Alabama game.
But Kelly also likes what he’s seeing from the three freshmen tight ends he just signed.
Out of the threesome, Mac Markway out of St. Louis, Missouri, is the highest ranked coming out of high school. ESPN.com ranked Markway as the nation’s number three tight end, despite missing his senior season with an injury. His dad, Matt Markway, is a former standout tight end at Iowa. Kelly says Mac Markway has leaned up and is much more agile.
Four-star tight end Ka’Morreun Pimpton has gotten bigger since arriving on LSU’s campus. Pimpton showed up on campus at 222 pounds, he’s now at 245, according to Kelly. BK also says Pimpton has soft hands. He caught 16 touchdown passes in his senior season at North Crowley High School in Fort Worth, Texas.
The other freshman tight end is Jackson McGohan from Miamisburg, Ohio. He stands at 6-foot-4, 235 pounds, so he may need another year in the weight room to bulk up. But his pass catching ability is more than solid. He caught 52 passes for 941 yards and 11 touchdowns in his senior season. He’s ranked as the 25th best tight end for this class by 247Sports.
