The LSU Tigers will not go undefeated. The McNeese Cowboys beat the Tigers on Tuesday night for the first time since 2019 with a 7-6 score at Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field.

How it happened: LSU pitchers walked six hitters and hit another five. The Cowboys scored in only two innings, but free passes in those innings cost the Tigers.

McNeese scored four times in the second inning. With two outs and a man on in the first, freshman starting pitcher Marcos Paz walked the seventh hitter, hit the eighth hitter and walked the number nine hitter in McNeese’s line-up.

Cooper Williams came in and hit the first batter he faced, and Cowboys right fielder Danny Barbero singled to drive in two more runs for a four-run inning.

In the fourth inning, Dax Dathe hit the first batter he faced. Mavrick Rizy replaced him and hit a batter and also walked a batter which resulted in another three runs scoring.

Good pitching performances: It wasn’t all bad on the mound for the Tigers. Freshman right-hander Reagan Ricken struck out four of the seven batters he faced. Devin Sheerin retired all five batters he faced. Sheerin is someone Coach Jay Johnson can count on as that was Sheerin’s second straight good performance.

Two home runs for the Tigers: Zach Yorke hit a massive blast in the first inning to give LSU a 2-0 lead. Yorke has four home runs, tied with Jake Brown for the lead. John Pearson also homered, a solo shot in the eighth inning to bring LSU within one run.

Injured Tiger: LSU catcher Cade Arrambide suffered a foot injury and was lifted for Omar Serna in the fourth inning. Coach Johnson did not provide any additional details in the postgame.

What it means: It’s baseball, and you will lose games. This one ended a 16-game winning streak dating back to last year. UCLA and Arkansas, two other teams ranked in the Top 10, also lost to in-state foes on Tuesday.

Up next: Expect the Tigers to be ready to play on Friday night as they will host Dartmouth. LSU will play Northeastern on Saturday and Monday and Dartmouth again on Sunday.
