LSU is into its second week of spring football practice and Tigers head coach Ed Orgeron says the newest members of his coaching staff have already been impressive.
“I think we did a great job at hiring the coaches and doing a great job of interviewing them,” Orgeron said. “I hired some coaches and I didn’t even interview them from the last staff and I’m never doing that again. I interviewed everybody.”
Orgeron said he is making sure he remains involved with the Tigers new coaches particularly new defensive coordinator Daronte Jones.
“Last year, I kind of stood out of it,” he said. “This year I’m not. If I see something I don’t like we’re not doing it and I’m very hands on. I don’t need to be. Daronte is very capable….. he’s an excellent coach but you know what, it’s my responsibility and I’m not letting it go.
“If there’s something our players can not perform we’re not doing it. I want to keep it simple. I want to keep our cleats in the grass and I want to play good fundamental defense.”
Orgeron said that LSU’s defense got the upper hand in the Tigers’ first scrimmage.
“They are playing very well on defense and doing exactly what we want to do,” Orgeron said. “We had very few missed tackles. We had very few explosive plays.”
