Don't look now, but LSU is in first place in the SEC west.

After falling to Florida State in their opener, it was hard to imagine the fighting Tigers would be in this position. But suddenly an offensive powerhouse, Jayden Daniels and the Tigers destroyed Florida and Ole Miss in back-to-back weeks.

They’re now 4-1 in the SEC, even with Alabama and Ole Miss in the west. How about that?

The Bayou Bengals look like a completely different team from the group that was blown out by Tennessee 3 weeks ago. Daniels might have even jumped into the race for the 2023 Heisman Trophy.

Tip your cap to head coach Brian Kelly. He's done a fine job of coaching this Tigers roster that was barren to start the season.

I'm not saying LSU is headed to the College Football Playoff, but I am saying it’s not impossible. And for any team to be able to say that this late in the season, something must have gone right. But hell, after the last two weeks you can't argue the future for the Purple & Gold is anything but bright. In a season that seven wins would have likely been celebrated, the expectation has now shifted to: Can the Tigers win the SEC West?

If I had asked that question prior to the start of the season, I’d have been laughed out of the room. But as the calendar turns to November, that is very much the question, and a valid one at that. But it won’t take long to get a definitive answer. After this week’s open date, the Tigers welcome longtime bully on the block Alabama.

Ask yourself this question: From Game 1 to the present, have the Bayou Bengals showed you enough to believe they can upend ‘Bama? For me, the answer is yes. That answer has been strengthened quite a bit by the last two wins.

Daniels should be considered a Heisman Trophy candidate, and it’s not that much of a reach considering the past two games. He’s accounted for 11 touchdowns, 6 rushing and 5 passing, and hasn’t turned the ball over once. That’s special stuff. He broke LSU’s QB rushing record and it only took him 8 games to do it.

The defense has also seen drastic improvement since Week 1. The bottom line: LSU is an ascending team. In two weeks the Tigers went from a 6-6 bet to a potential for 9-3 or better.

The Tiger Cubs have matured before our eyes into full-grown adults who are mauling any SEC foe foolish enough to stumble across their path. Soon they could be back to reigning supreme in the SEC jungle.

Kelly is the real deal, and Daniels is looking that way, too. What he and his staff have done with this shorthanded football program in Year 1 of their regime is nothing short of incredible. Heck, the offensive line is starting two freshmen at left and right tackle and you wouldn't know it based on their performance.

To quote the band Timbuk 3, "my future so bright, I gotta wear shades." That is how I feel about LSU this season and for the foreseeable future.  Jump on board the Kelly train. He's gonna deliver a first class trip.

As for the rest of the season? Just sit back and enjoy. No matter what happens the Tigers are exactly where you want them to be, considering the last two disastrous seasons under Coach O.

The Tigers finally have a guy that can give LSU sustainable success. This team and its coach is no flash in the pan.
