A big season is expected out of fifth-year senior quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, and he’ll have plenty of options to throw the ball to when he drops back to pass.
Coach Brian Kelly said at the start of preseason camp, the Tigers have eight SEC caliber receivers.
How many of them receive regular playing remains to be seen, but Nussmeier likes the quantity and quality of his receivers.
“You’re going to see a lot of versatility and a lot of explosiveness,” Nussmeier said. “When you have the number of weapons that we do, the different body styles, body types at receiver, at running back and at tight end, I think you’ll see a lot of different things, I think you’ll see us move the ball well, I think you’ll see a lot of different guys touch the football.”
Aaron Anderson, Barion Brown, Chris Hilton, and Zavion Thomas are expected to be the main four receivers. Kyle Parker, Nic Anderson, and Destyn Hill will be fighting for playing time.
Hilton and Brown bring speed and the potential to hit on deep passes.
LSU’s two top tight ends bring another dimension to the passing game. Bauer Sharp led Oklahoma with 42 receptions last season and 6-foot-7 Trey’Dez Green caught four touchdown passes in limited action as a freshman.
“Bauer is a very special football player, his playing making ability with the ball in his hands, he’s able to go up and make plays, as we did last year with Trey’Dez, I think you’ll see the same type of thing with him, put the ball in his hands to allow him to make plays, I think we have equal trust with both of those guys, anytime either one of those guys has a one-on-one opportunity they are winning.”
LSU expects to win a lot of games this year and they will do it by throwing the football to multiple targets in the passing game.
