Brian Kelly is the next head football coach at LSU, but what will make that hire a success?

That subject was the discussion on SportsTalk this week, with Bobby Hebert, Mike Detillier and Kristian Garic weighing in on Scott Woodward's latest splash hire.

"You've just got to win," Hebert said. "You've got to win, and I think they will win. ... Look, he got Notre Dame to the postseason. He can get LSU to the postseason."

The Tigers were announcing Kelly as their new head football coach on Wednesday, days ahead of conference championship weekend with the coach's former Notre Dame squad still in the running for a potential College Football Playoff berth if the breaks go their way.

But Kelly won't be there regardless, he won't be coaching another Irish football game after a remarkably productive 11-year run since taking over in South Bend.

"The past 5 years have been Kelly's best, you know, what have you done for me lately? ... When you compare him to Lincoln Riley, I think it'd have been a win-win either way," Hebert said.

LSU announced midseason it'd be moving on from Ed Orgeron at head coach, with the former Tigers coach announcing the win over Texas A&M to close out the regular season would be his final game. Brad Davis, the first-year OL coach in Baton Rouge, will serve as the interim.

Orgeron's final two seasons, which LSU finished .500 after a perfect season and CFP title, were marred by off-the-field questions, motivation concerns and other issues. That's not what LSU should be getting in Kelly.

"He's no lightning-rod head coach. You had two of them. Les [Miles] and his personality, and Coach O. They were lightning rod coaches. You're not going to get that with Brian," Detillier said. "Brian's sort of the adult in the room. He's always been known [as a] strict guy, disciplinarian. A guy that is a fundamentally strong coach. Teaches it. Preaches it. Mentally tough."
