Notre Dame football coach Brian Kelly announced the hiring of Cinncinati’s Marcus Freeman as the Irish’s next defensive coordinator Friday.

Freeman was LSU head coach Ed Orgeron’s top target for the same position in Baton Rouge, according to a report from the Advocate.

Orgeron said earlier this week that he was conducting an interview with the Tigers top defensive coordinator candidate Thursday and that he hoped to have the position filled by the weekend.

On Wednesday, LSU announced the hiring of Jake Peetz and DJ Mangas as LSU’s offensive and passing game coordinators.

This past season, Freeman helped the No. 8-ranked Bearcats win the American Athletic Conference Championship, the program’s first outright league title since 2009.

He guided Cincinnati’s defense to a top-20 ranking in several categories this past season, including being ranked 13th in total defense (324.6 yards per game) and eighth in scoring defense (16.8 points per game).
