LSU tight end Trey’Dez Green set a program record last season, catching seven touchdown passes — the most ever by an LSU tight end in a single season.
Now, the 6-foot-7 junior from Jackson, Louisiana, could be in line for an even bigger year in Lane Kiffin’s offense.
Green said he is excited about what LSU fans will see this season.
“It’s going to be a lot of exciting things to see this season,” Green said. “I’m just so appreciative of Coach Cox, Coach Charlie Weis and Coach Lane Kiffin, of how accepting they have been of me. I love them.”
Green caught 33 passes for 433 yards and a team-high seven touchdowns last season. His combination of size, strength and wingspan makes him a difficult matchup, especially near the goal line.
LSU offensive coordinator Charlie Weis Jr. said Green brings much more than physical talent to the field.
“He’ll just go all day if you let him,” Weis said of Green’s work ethic. “What’s cool, too, is how much he can handle mentally, putting on his plate, which allows us the ability to put him in a lot of different positions and do some really cool things with him.”
Green will be catching passes from new starting quarterback Sam Leavitt, and he says the chemistry between the two is already strong.
“One of my best friends here, we talk a lot,” Green said. “There’s not a time that he’s thinking something that I’m not on the same page with him. We don’t have to say anything to each other. So I feel that chemistry is just there, and it’s going to be exciting and fun.”
Green called Leavitt “a wonderful player” and “a wonderful leader” and said he is grateful to have him as his quarterback.
There is a possibility Green could have another proven pass-catching tight end alongside him this season.
LSU is awaiting a court decision on the eligibility of fifth-year tight end Dae’Quan Wright. Wright was a second-team All-SEC selection last season at Ole Miss, helping the Rebels reach the College Football Playoff semifinals.
Green said he would welcome Wright to LSU’s tight end room, even if it means fewer opportunities for himself.
“It’s amazing to me,” Green said. “Even if it means less catches, less yards, I’m all about bringing this national championship back to Baton Rouge. I had the chance to talk with him. We just clicked ever since we met each other.”
LSU fans will get their first look at how Kiffin and his offensive staff plan to use Green on Saturday night when the Tigers host Clemson in Death Valley. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m.
