The LSU women’s basketball team will leave on Wednesday for the SEC Tournament in Greenville, South Carolina. Lady Tigers coach Kim Mulkey will be on the plane, but she’s not fired up to play in the conference tournament.
Mulkey has made it known she’s not a fan of conference tournaments, but she really showed her disdain following the regular season finale against Mississippi State.
“My viewpoint has always been, what’s the purpose of conference tournaments?” Mulkey said. “For the Cinderellas, how many Cinderellas do you really have in women’s basketball? Is it some of them just need one more win, they are on the bubble? I don’t know. But I know throughout my career, I’ve always wanted to go from the regular season conference to postseason.”
Mulkey won 11 Big 12 conference tournament championships at Baylor. However, she has not won an SEC Tournament title at LSU and faces a challenging road to securing her first one this week.
LSU is a 4-seed, and the Tigers' first opponent could be the 5th-seeded Oklahoma on Friday afternoon. LSU beat Oklahoma in January, but the Sooners ended the regular season on a six-game winning streak.
If LSU can beat Oklahoma, they will most likely get top-seeded South Carolina on Saturday night.
The Lady Tigers have lost 18 straight to the Gamecocks.
Once Mulkey and LSU get to Greenville, the competitive juices will start flowing, but don’t expect LSU to pull out all the stops to bring a trophy home.
