LSU’s starting quarterback, Sam Leavitt, did not complete a pass in 11-on-11 team drills during spring football, but it was still a productive spring for the number one player in the transfer portal.
Leavitt, who missed a few practices after having screws removed from surgically repaired foot, returned for the final practice of spring football on Saturday and threw what would have been a long touchdown pass in seven-on-seven drills.
“He only played eight plays,” said coach Lane Kiffin. “We did seven-on-seven first, which we normally wouldn’t do, just so Sam and a number of other (injured) players, including (linebacker) Whit Weeks, were able to do that because they wouldn’t have been able to do team stuff.”
Since Leavitt is still waiting for his foot to completely heal from his Lisfranc surgery, he’s spent a lot of time taking mental reps and talking with Kiffin and other coaches.
Kiffin says Leavitt is all about football.
“Very few players really love the game – the work that’s within it. And Sam is that,” Kiffin said. “He loves to go home at night and spend more time on football – on the things he can develop, not just physically, but mentally also.”
In 2024, Leavitt led Arizona State to a Big 12 Championship and an appearance in a College Football Playoff.
Kiffin says Leavitt is now ready to lead LSU to big things.
“He’s really competitive, wants to be great,” said Kiffin. “Wants the team to be great. He’s in a really good place that way. Just still working through his foot before getting out there and being able to play with the guys more.”
Leavitt’s time is coming, and the Tigers are counting on him to do great things.
