The 9th ranked LSU baseball team ended McNeese’s nation leading 12 game winning streak with a 10-3 win over the Cowboys to begin a nine-game homestand on Tuesday night.
First baseman Jared Jones, who had just one hit in the series sweep at Auburn, busted out of his mini-slump with a three-hit performance, including a two-run home run in the first inning. Jones also had an RBI single in the second inning to give LSU a 4-0 lead.
Ethan Frey also had a three-hit performance. The Tigers designated hitter had an RBI single and an RBI double.
After struggling with runners in scoring position against Auburn, LSU was 5-for-13 with inners in scoring position against McNeese.
But after the game, Coach Jay Johnson announced that relief pitcher Gavin Guidry will undergo surgery to fix a back injury that has bothered the Lake Charles native since Friday.
Johnson says the procedure will take place on Friday and the recovery time is between three to four months.
Guidry was supposed to be a key part of LSU’s pitching staff. The junior has the most pitching experience in the SEC on the team. He also wears the number 8 jersey, which goes to a player that exemplifies leadership, dedication and the spirit of the program.
Johnson said Guidry threw several bullpens, but the injury just never responded.
However, LSU is seeing more good performances from their young pitchers in the bullpen.
In the win over McNeese, Mavrick Rizy threw 2.2 innings and struck out six. Fellow freshman Cooper Williams struck out two in one inning of work. Jacob Mayers also struck out two in the ninth inning.
Up next for LSU, the Tigers host Alabama in a three game series that starts Thursday. The Crimson Tide are 8-7 in SEC play after a strong start in league play.
