LSU focusing on the right outcomes

There is a contingent of the fan base that wants to see major changes with the LSU football program as the Tigers are suffering their first three-game losing streak since 2021.

But with two games left in the regular season, Coach Brian Kelly is taking a much more moderate approach for now.

“We have to stick with our process and then maybe there are some things you have to tweak within that and that’s how I’ve operated for 34 years,” Kelly said.

During his Monday press conference following a frustrating loss to Florida, Kelly said he feels the pain of the entire state when the Tigers do not perform well.

Which is why he wants to get it right, even if it doesn’t mean a spot in the SEC Championship game or in the 12-team college football playoff.

“Every ounce of our energy, every minute of the day is focused on getting the right outcomes that was certainly was the case after the Florida game,” Kelly said.

He said figuring out how to score more points and limiting the explosive plays will be the focus.

But will the players be motivated? Kelly said it’s up to a player to motivate himself, but coaches can help if they focus on things they’ve done well.

The Tigers are 6-and-4, but Kelly says the losses to USC, Texas A&M and Florida were games they had a chance to win.

“I can stand here and say we didn’t get the job done, we didn’t finish, but this football team is far from not believing they can do the job and get the job done,” Kelly said.

The losing streak has Kelly getting more involved and that includes holding the offensive play sheet in his hands during the Florida game.

He said co-offensive coordinator Joe Sloan remains the play caller, but he could override a play call, but has chosen not to do so.

“The key here is the ability to make sure that the game is going in the manner that I want it go in, at times you have to take action as the head coach, not that somebody is being put in the penalty box, but making sure it goes through the vision that I have for that particular game,” Kelly said.

Not many LSU fans could envision the Tigers would be 6-and-4 and in jeopardy of losing a fourth straight game to Vanderbilt.

Kelly has an idea on how to finish this season on a positive note, but will the players follow his lead remains the big question?
