We’re less than a month away from the season opener against Clemson and LSU fans are hopeful the Tigers defense will show improvement with Blake Baker in his second season as the defensive coordinator.
It’s hard to tell how good LSU’s defense will be this year, but the future looks bright, especially considering the talent they are bringing in on the D-line.
On Saturday, the Tigers landed a commitment from four-star defensive tackle Deuce Geralds from Suwanee, Georgia. Just a few days before Geralds announced his verbal pledge, many of the recruiting experts had Geralds going to Oregon.
But during an announcement ceremony in Atlanta, Geralds said LSU has been his dream school growing up and he called Baton Rouge his hometown as he has family in the Capital City.
Geralds is the fourth top 100 recruit on the defensive line that’s committed to LSU, joining Lamar Brown, Trenton Henderson and Richard Anderson.
News and notes on preseason camp:
After four days of fall camp, several players on defense have stood out. On the defensive line, Florida transfer Jack Pyburn has been intense at defensive end. South Florida Bernard Gooden has looked good.
Whit Weeks missed practice on Saturday as he continues to work his way back from a dislocated ankle. Tylen Singleton from Many High School in north Louisiana ran with the ones alongside West Weeks.
New safeties A.J. Haulcy and Tamarcus Cooley also made plays on Saturday.
Cornerback PJ Woodland has also looked good at the start of this camp.
Injuries
I mentioned Whit Weeks missed practice Saturday. His brother, West Weeks, said it’s not a big deal. Leading receiver Aaron Anderson has yet to practice as he has a sleeve on his left leg.
Ju’Juan Johnson back to RB?
LSU continues to look at ways to utilize Ju’Juan Johnson’s gifted ability with the ball in his hands. At Lafayette Christian Academy, Johnson set the record for total yards and touchdowns for a high school football player in Louisiana.
He arrived at LSU as a defensive back after a stellar career at quarterback for LCA. Johnson was moved to running back last September when injuries hit that position.
In the spring, he worked exclusively at quarterback, but at Saturday’s practice he was working at running back again.
They said it:
Linebacker West Weeks says the defensive playbook is bigger this year with Blake Baker in his second year as defensive coordinator.
“We all know our job, and now it’s the details, we can disguise this to throw off the QB, we are trying to show different stuff, we are trying to cause a lot more confusion, we all know coming into our second year with coach Blake Baker we know exactly what we need to do, now it’s just disguising everything and playing mind games with the QB.”
