Sophomore linebacker Whit Weeks has shown the ability to shed blocks and make tackles and that’s resulting in him shedding the label of a platoon player.
Coach Brian Kelly has been impressed with what he’s seen from Weeks this season.
“Clearly he’s been our top performer and put himself in a position where it’s going to be difficult for us to take him off the field at any time and that’s going to prompt us to make some tough decisions relative to the linebacker positions,” Kelly said.
Weeks is one of the team leaders in tackles with 12, despite not starting the first two games. Harold Perkins and Greg Penn were the two starting linebackers in the first two games.
But it sounds like LSU will make some personnel changes on defense this Saturday at South Carolina.
Earlier this week, Kelly said the coaching staff is examining whether the Tigers should stay in the nickel, which means two linebackers, or three-linebacker sets. This statement was in response to Perkins only recording three tackles against Nicholls.
Kelly has also said Zy Alexander will see his playing time increase at cornerback, allowing Sage Ryan to move back to safety.
LSU will face a South Carolina defense this Saturday that’s averaging just 270 total yards a game in victories over Old Dominion and Kentucky.
LaNorris Sellers is the Gamecocks starting quarterback. He’s thrown for just 280 yards in two games and has completed 54-percent of his passes.
Kelly says Sellers is an ascending player in the SEC that can make splash plays with a strong arm.
Raheim Sanders is Arkansas’ leading rusher. The former All-SEC performer at Arkansas has 142 yards on the ground and is averaging 3.9 yards a carry.
